The Bangalore University was established on 10 July 1964 as a federal university. In the start, the University was built around two premier institutes of learning the central college and the University Of Vishvesarya College Of Engineering. Today, the University is one of the Hot Spots of learning in the Bangalore City. The university has 6 faculties, viz; Arts, Science, Commerce & Management, Education, Law and Engineering.

The Bangalore University offers education through 41 post-graduate departments, One post-graduate Centre at Kolar (started during 1994-95), 3 constituent college, 473 affiliated colleges (of which 88 have PG courses) and several other Centers and Directorates of higher learning and research.

The University is promised to provide education to all. To fulfill its purpose the university offers in-campus program as well as off-campus program. The off-campus programs are offered through distance education mode.
